On Thursday June 15th , 2017 Lumacare celebrated World Elder Abuse Awareness Day with its 6th Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Walk in the North York community.
The day was a great success with 100 participants, including Lumacare Clients, Lumacare staff, Board Members, City Counsellors, Community Resource Officer from Toronto Police Services, Loopstra Nixon LLP Lawyer, Family Service Toronto, and the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario.
The day started with Toronto Police Services providing an informative presentation on various Financial Scams seniors may encounter today. He then spoke on Elder Abuse and what the Police can do for seniors. The officer then opened the floor to any questions regarding Elder Abuse. Following this was our Panel Discussion which featured Lumacare, Loopstra Nixon LLP Lawyer, Family Service Toronto, and the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario. The panel went through questions regarding abuse, and how each agency can assist a senior in need, and the ways a senior can reach out for assistance.
After the panel, all participants went outside of the Lumacare Main Office and walked in the community to raise awareness along Wilson Avenue. Many participants held signs that informed the community what we were walking for, and the community had a great response with cheers and honks from many cars.
Due to our walk and raising awareness in the community the Elder Abuse Committee was able to directly assist a senior in need who saw the signs outside in their community on June 15th. The senior felt comfortable and safe enough to come into our office and disclose information to us. Our Committee was able to immediately, and confidentially assist the senior in need.
We are thrilled and excited that we were able to make such an immediate and positive impact in our community, and hope to make our Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day event even bigger next year!
