Lumacare, formerly Downsview Services for Seniors, represents our unrelenting focus on quality and our passion for excellence. Above all, it signifies our tireless commitment to bring light into the lives of each and every one of our clients.
Lumacare provides a diverse range of over 15 essential Programs and Services, both in the home and the community.
- Working as a local nurse, Inger Holm identified a need for a Meals on Wheels program in the Downsview area and surrounding communities. In 1974, Inger applied for a small grant and founded Downsview Services for Seniors.
- Inger worked for 15 years to secure sustainable funding, expand programming and meet the needs of older adults until her retirement in 1989.
- What started as a three-day-a-week Meals on Wheels program has blossomed into an agency of 200 staff who serve over 3000 older adults annually.

Since 1974, Downsview Services for Seniors (DSS) has provided equitable and accessible services to diverse communities.
Over this time, the agency expanded to eight unique service locations across Toronto and touched the lives of many individuals outside of the Downsview geographical area. Our name no longer represented us as a whole and in light of our 40th anniversary in 2014 and our newly implemented family-centric strategic plan-it was time to rename and rebrand ourselves. As of December 1st 2014, Downsview Services for Seniors is now Lumacare.

It has been an exciting year as we celebrated our 40th anniversary, transitioned to our new name and brand, opened a new service location, and implemented new and innovative programming.
